The terrible earthquake which
occurred in Haiti on January 12 resulted in over 200 000 deaths,
hundreds of thousands wounded and homeless, considerable damages.
Seldom has this American island rested since its independence in
1804, won after a revolution organized by former slaves. Apart from
the recurrence of ecological disasters, the external debt of Haiti
has continuously increased and accumulated. This largely contributed
to sink the domestic economy, though flourishing in the past.
Many weeks after the quake,
countries on the field like the USA and organizations like the UN
have not yet been able to organize an effective and efficient food
distribution. Despite the emergency aid and the myriad promises
of millions coming from all over the world, most of the populations
despair of being taken care of.
Questions: Could the
interest and international solidarity raised by the case of Haiti
finally boost its sustainable development? How can Africa help Haiti?
